The geographic location of our counties—with our urban
center of Winston-Salem about 100 miles west of Raleigh , 80 miles
north of Charlotte, and 30 miles south of the Virginia border—has
played an important role in the development of our region’s
unique musical identity. Workers came to the Northwest Piedmont
from the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains and from other parts of the
state and South to seek jobs in industries such as textiles and
tobacco. African- and European-Americans flocked here to find
work, and with them came their instruments and music. As a result,
our region of North Carolina served as a musical convergence point
for European- and African-American musicians and music styles.

This multicultural
music legacy continues today. When you consider our Moravian
music traditions as part of our mix, our area enjoys a unique
musical character found nowhere else in the United States.
County residents—plumbers, artisans, doctors, teachers,
scientists, farmers, factory workers—keep our varied
music traditions alive. And whether it's at a Monday night
barn dance in Davidson County, a jazz series on the streets
of downtown Winston-Salem, a live music radio show in Surry
County, a Moravian Easter sunrise service in a Stokes County
meadow, a bluegrass and gospel jam session at a Yadkin County
crossroads, or a fiddlers' convention at a Davie County picnic
grounds, these dedicated folk create high quality music that
lifts the spirits of performers and audience members alike.
