Description of Event: At
this fundraiser, local musicians donate their time
to help raise money for troubled young people. Past performers at
the Fest include two-time world champion string banjo player Ray
Edwards and the Trinity Mountain Boys, Jake Hiatt and Spur of the
Moment Band, The Marshall Brothers and Highroad, The Stoney Creek
Band, and 2006 Galax Fiddler’s Convention winners Rich in
Tradition. Visitors can sample pounds of pounds of hot wings,
ranging from bar-b-cue and spicy, to burn your belly and 911-grade
wings. For children, the Fest has
face painting and make-your-own
cotton candy booths. There is also a silent auction
of crafts by campers.
History of Site/Event:
In 2006, Fisher River Park needed an event and Camp
E-Mun-Talee for troubled youngsters needed a fundraiser. The Wings
Fest raises funds for the camp to continue. Camp E-Mun-Talee, which
means "They Overcome" in the Muskokee Native American language,
houses troubled youth from ages 10-16 and is operated by Eckerd
Youth Alternatives, a private, not-for-profit organization.
Description of Site/Facility:
Situated in the park, the 42 x
30 ft amphitheater provides ample space for musical performances.
Picnic tables are available, but patrons are also encouraged to
bring their own lawn chairs.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
At the Jammin’ Wings Fest, the community can have a fun time while
supporting a worthy cause.
