Born
from older, deeply rooted singing traditions, and influenced and embellished
by the innovations of musical upstarts jazz, rhythm and blues, and
bluegrass, gospel music takes many forms as it rings out across the
communities of our region.
Go to any of the counties on any day of the year, and you won't make
many stops without seeing flyers announcing community gospel benefits
taking place in local churches, fire departments, and school auditoriums.
There are countless gospel bands, choirs, quartets, ensembles, and
individuals making music in the region daily. To learn
how our region's African American gospel scene fits into the bigger
picture, you can go to www.negrospirituals.com
for information on the development of African American gospel and
spirituals in the United States. For information on the development
of Southern gospel, you can go to www.singingnews.com/about_southern_gospel.lasso.
